What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia refers to the enlarged glandular tissue in male breasts, also known as "man boobs". Gynecomastia surgery aims to remove excess breast tissue to reveal a flatter chest and restore the patient's self-confidence. We’re able to do this by either liposuction of the chest or cutting out the excess tissue to reveal a more masculine chest. Gynecomastia can be caused by a variety of issues: hormonal imbalance, a side effect from medication, hyperthyroidism, chronic kidney failure, etc., which can drastically affect a man's self-esteem and is often times a sensitive subject matter. Who Is A Good Candidate For Gynecomastia Surgery?

Plastic surgery should always be a personal decision that is not influenced by the opinions of others. Patients must be in good health to be considered for this procedure. If you identify with any of the following, then you may be a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery:

  • Must be at a stable weight and physically healthy with no medical conditions that impair healing

  • Breast tissue cannot be targeted with diet and exercise

  • Excessive fatty tissue on your pecs

  • Feelings of embarrassment or insecurity due to excessive breast tissue

  • Fear of taking off your shirt in front of others

Are There Different Gynecomastia Techniques?

Yes, there are different options that your plastic surgeon will choose between based on the amount of fatty breast tissue present. Typically, gynecomastia patients that have minimal fatty tissue will only require liposuction, while others with excessive fatty tissue will require tissue excision surgery.

  • Liposuction of the chest: For mild cases, our plastic surgeon will use liposuction to address the excess breast tissue. These small liposuction incisions will be placed at the inframammary fold (the natural breast crease) directly below the nipple.

  • Gynecomastectomy: For cases with a moderate amount of breast tissue, our plastic surgeon will create a horizontal incision placed along the inframammary fold (the natural breast crease) or periareolar (around the lower border of the areola) to remove excess breast tissue.

  • Gynecomastectomy with free nipple graft: For severe cases with a large amount of excess breast tissue and skin, our plastic surgeon would complete a full removal of the tissue and skin excision, requiring a free nipple graft. This surgery is very similar to a partial mastectomy with free nipple graft, and will have similar inclusions and scarring. A horizontal incision will be placed at the inframammary fold (the natural breast crease).

How Long Is Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery?

Typically, patients will need at least 1 week off from work and must avoid any cardiovascular activity or heavy lifting (>5lbs) for 4-6 weeks after their gynecomastia surgery.

It is important to understand that your exact recovery time depends on the extent of your procedure and how your body responds to the surgery. Our team will guide you through your recovery process with post-op instructions in order to ensure a safe and smooth recovery.
