What is ear correction?
Ear correction surgery, also known as an Otoplasty, is a procedure used to reduce the size and/or correct the symmetry of a patient's ears. Many patients are unhappy with the larger size of their ears as they commonly protrude outward which can become a major cause of low self confidence. Some patients feel that their ears droop too low or simply are asymmetrical. This corrective surgery enables adults and children alike to enhance their appearance and immensely boost their self esteem by repositioning the ears to sit closer to the head while attaining a symmetrical appearance. If a patient is undergoing Ear Correction surgery on both ears, this is referred to as an Bilateral Otoplasty. Choose Ear Correction Surgery in Orlando, FL.
Who is a good candidate for Ear Correction?
Unlike many other procedures, children are the most common candidate for this ear correction surgery as protruding ears are often targeted by other children with incessant bullying. Once the child's ears are fully matured, typically around 5 or 6 years old, they are eligible to enroll in this procedure. However, Ear Correction surgery in Orlando can be performed at any age over 5 years old as long as the patient is in good health.
As with any plastic surgery, patients must always be in good health to be considered for this procedure. So, what makes a "good" candidate besides simply being in good health?
- Ears protrude
- Ears are "droopy"
- You often feel distressed that people are staring at your ears
- Others are incessantly bullying you because of your ears
- You have low self confidence because of your ears
How long is Ear Correction recovery?
Typically, downtime for Otoplasty surgery is under a week. Following your procedure, you will have gauze wrapped around your head in order to assist with your recovery. After a few days, you will be able to remove this dressing. It isn't uncommon to experience slight discomfort following surgery, however this will subside quickly. Here's a few tips to follow while in recovery:
- Avoid any rigorous activity following surgery
- Avoid extreme heat while wearing bandages
- Keep your head elevated
- Do not sleep on the side of your recovering ear. If you underwent a Bilateral Otoplasty, simply sleep on your back.
However, it is important to understand that your Ear Correction recovery depends on the extent of your surgery and how your body responds to the surgery. Dr. Z and our staff will guide you through your recovery process. It's important to follow all of Dr. Z's instructions in order to ensure a healthy, safe, and cleanly recovery.
