The Top Plastic Surgery Procedures In 2018
2018 was a huge year for plastic surgery, with large increases across the board in the number of procedures performed in the United States as well as worldwide. In 2018 we saw plastic surgery trend to include an increase more non-invasive procedures such as Botox, Kybella, chemical peels and fillers, but there are still a number of traditional plastic surgery procedures that topped the charts last year.
Of the almost 2 million procedures over the year, we will look at the most popular plastic surgery procedures of 2018 and share our predictions for trends in the New Year. Note: statistics are based on 2017 figures from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
Breast Augmentation
Unsurprisingly, the top plastic surgery procedure was breast augmentation in 2017 with over 300,000 performed in the U.S. Breast augmentation refers to an increase in breast size through the insertion of breast implants or a fat injection from another part of the body. The ASPS also saw a jump in the number of breast reductions, which were up more than 10% from 2016.
Liposuction
Liposuction saw about a 6% jump between 2016 and 2017 with 270,000 procedures done in 2017. Liposuction removes fat that people can’t seem to lose through diet and exercise alone. Common areas for liposuction include: the belly, back, arms, legs and buttocks.
Rhinoplasty
More commonly known as a “nose job” or “nose reshaping”, rhinoplasty procedures dropped from 2016 to 2017, but they still made the top 5 list with over 218,000 performed in 2017. Rhinoplasty is most commonly used to reshape the nose to be more symmetrical, remove bumps, or reshape nostrils. Rhinoplasty can also be used to correct issues with breathing through your nose. However, our plastic surgeon does not offer this surgery.
Eyelid Surgery
Coming in at spot four of the top plastic surgery procedures is eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty as it’s commonly known in the medical community. Over 200,000 eyelid surgeries were performed in 2017, which is on par with the 2016 stats. Eyelid surgeries work to tighten any sagging or drooping skin around the eyes.
Tummy Tuck
Though tummy tucks dropped off the top five list of procedures in 2016, they’ve made a swift comeback in 2017 and 2018. Tummy tucks work to restore the sought-after abdominal profile that people are yearning for by removing excess fat and skin.
In terms of the growing numbers of minimally invasive procedures, here are the most sough-after procedures of the year among the over 15 million of these types of procedures done:
· Botox – 7 million procedures
· Fillers – over 2.5 million procedures
· Chemical peels – over 1.3 million procedures
· Laser hair removal – over 1 million procedures
· Microdermabrasion – nearly 750,000 procedures
Predictions for 2019
We predict we’ll be seeing an even larger spike in minimally invasive procedures in the coming years as people become more focused on their looks in an ever-changing landscape of social media and the high standards of beauty seen on there. These procedures are often more affordable than invasive procedures, which is another reason we expect the numbers to climb in the coming years.
