What Is A Breast Implant Exchange?

A breast implant exchange is a great procedure if you want to change the size, shape, position, or symmetry provided by your existing implants. To do this, your surgeon will reopen the pocket using the same incision as your first surgery and remove your existing implants. Then, they will place silicone or saline-filled implant either above or below the muscle, to give you your desired shape and size.

Is Breast Implant Exchange Performed Under Local Or General Anesthesia?

Breast implant exchange surgery is performed under general anesthesia and the procedure typically lasts between 60-90 minutes.

Who Is A Candidate For A Breast Implant Exchange?

Patients who identify with the following may be a good candidate for a breast implant exchange. However, the only way to determine your candidacy for surgery is to meet with a plastic surgeon during a consultation:

  • A ruptured implant that needs to be replaced

  • Desire to increase or decrease the current size of your implants

  • Desire to correct the asymmetry of your breasts

  • Not currently breastfeeding

  • No medical conditions that will impair healing

  • Non-smoker or willing to quit smoking 6 weeks before and after surgery

How Long Is Breast Implant Exchange Recovery?

Usually, patients are able to return to work one week after surgery. However, patients must avoid cardiovascular activity and cannot lift anything above 5 lbs for about 4 - 6 weeks after surgery or until they’ve been cleared by their plastic surgeon.

It is important to understand that each patient is unique and your recovery time can depend on a variety of factors.

  • Enhancement: Immediate

  • 70% Swelling reduction: 4 - 6 weeks

  • Full settling and recovery: 3 - 6 months
