What Is A Neck Lift?

A Neck Lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that serves to improve the visible signs of aging along the jawline and neck. This procedure targets the excess fat and relaxed skin that creates jowls in order to give the patient a more youthful, sharply-defined jawline. The procedure also removes fatty deposits under the chin as well as any muscle banding in the neck for more natural contours. Who Is A Good Candidate For A Neck Lift?

Plastic surgery should always be a personal decision that is not influenced by the opinions of others. Patients must be in good health to be considered for this procedure. If you identify with any of the following, then you may be a good candidate for a neck lift:

  • You’re not a smoker or you’re willing to quit smoking 6 weeks before and after surgery

  • Self-consciousness about aging skin

  • Wrinkling or sagging in lower face, jawline, and neck

  • Noticeable jowls or muscle banding in the neck

  • Hanging skin underneath your chin

How Is A Neck Lift Performed?

During a Neck Tuck (platysmaplasty), the surgeon will make a small incision under the chin where the platysma muscle is found. From the incision, the muscle is tightened, the excess skin removed, and the incision sutured. Surgery time is about 2 - 2.5 hours and the scarring is very minimal, with only a small, horizontal line under the chin.

During a Lower Facelift (lower rhytidectomy), the surgeon will make a small incision under the chin for the tightening of the neck muscles, and an incision before each ear for treating the jawline. From the incision in front of the ears, the muscles of the jawline are lifted and the excess fat is removed. Surgery time is about 5 hours and the scarring is also very minimal.

Are There Different Neck Lift Procedures?

Neck Tuck: A Neck Tuck, or a platysmaplasty, only addresses the bands in the neck that tend to hang and make the neck look like it is sagging and stretched. The procedure works by tightening the muscles in the neck to reduce the look of “banding.”

Lower Face Lift: A Lower Face Lift, or lower rhytidectomy, removes the excess fat or loose skin around the jawline, and also addresses the banding and loose skin around the neck. This procedure is a bit more extensive and takes a few more hours to complete.

How Long Is Neck Lift Recovery?

Typically, patients will need at least 1 week off from work and must avoid any cardiovascular activity or heavy lifting (>5lbs) for 2 weeks after their neck lift surgery.

It is important to understand that your exact recovery time depends on the extent of your procedure and how your body responds to the surgery. Our team will guide you through your recovery process with post-op instructions in order to ensure a safe and smooth recovery. We also have a 24-hour emergency line if you need to get in contact with one of our nurses during your recovery process.
