Often, weight loss leaves our bodies with excess, unwanted skin in unsightly places. All of that hard work it took to get to this point suddenly doesn’t seem so rewarding, does it? Here at HZ Plastic Surgery, we are intimately familiar with these struggles and complaints— this is why we do what we do! If your thighs are the main source of your woes, a thigh lift (also known as a thighplasty) might be a great option for you. Here, we’ll explain what happens during a thigh lift; there are some differences between a true thigh lift and intentional thigh liposuction.

Thigh Lift vs. Thigh Liposuction

So does a thigh lift use liposuction? The short answer: sometimes. While your surgeon may recommend a multi-faceted approach to refine your thighs, liposuction isn’t always necessary in revealing the beautiful features hiding underneath your excess skin. In general, a thigh lift uses direct incisions to remove tissue and reduce the impact of sagging skin. Liposuction procedures use needles to break down and remove fat deposits from underneath the skin’s surface; liposuction does not affect the skin whatsoever.

How Does a Thigh Lift Work?

Much like a facelift or a butt-lift, a thigh lift uses incisions and resection (the removal of tissue) to sculpt your figure and reduce the amount of sagging skin in an area. This technique is different from liposuction in that a true “lift” does not remove any fat, only excess skin.

There are two different approaches to the thigh lift; each requires incisions in different areas. Your surgeon may recommend that both approaches be used— especially if there is a large amount of excess skin to be removed.

Thigh Lift Incisions

Depending on the approach that your surgeon has decided upon, you may have incisions in the groin area or around the full front of your upper thigh. A medial thigh lift is performed using incisions in the groin; these will scar in a location that is minimally visible, even in a bikini! The medial approach is best for sculpting the inner thighs and is usually enough to get the results you are looking for.

A lateral thigh lift may be necessary if you have loose, sagging skin on the outer thighs. This approach will require incisions to be made around the top and outside of the thigh; if you are worried about scarring in these locations, make sure to follow your post-op instructions for incision care meticulously and consider using some scar products.
